Érase un verano (There Once Was a Summer) enters into dialogue with the late painting of J. M. W. Turner, where form begins to dissolve into atmosphere and light becomes the true pictorial subject. However, while Turner moved toward Romantic sublimity, here the focus is on an interior experience. It does not depict a landscape, but rather the memory of a season lived — its temperature, its sensation. This work represents remembrance.

Érase un verano is part of the series Impulsos, together with works such as Érase un espejismo (There Once Was a Mirage), Érase una tormenta (There Once Was a Storm), Érase una pesadilla (There Once Was a Nightmare) and Érase un despertar (There Once Was an Awakening.) These paintings were created partially or entirely with the hands. The use of the internal narrator (“Once there was…”) evokes lived time, dreamed time — the memories that remain. Taken together, these pieces function as fragments of a visual book of memories, in which each painting becomes a sensory chapter.
